The Annual General Meeting was held in the Fieldhead Hotel at Markfield on Saturday 10 November.
After the Exhortation, the President, David Whimpenny, read out a citation for Rev. Canon Derek Buxton who had been the Branch Chaplain for the last 16 years. Membership Council Member John Clark presented Derek with a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Branch for all his efforts during this time.
Derek's wife, Eileen, was presented with a bunch of flowers for her support, especially for playing the organ during our services in St Mary in the Elms Church at Woodhouse.
The President then proceeded to surprise John Farrell who has acted as the Branch Treasurer since it's inception in 1996. After the citation was read, John was presented by John Clark, on behalf of the National Chairment, with his Gold Badge for his outstanding contributions to the Branch.
|Just when the surprises were thought to be over, David
Whimpenny read out another citation, this time for Bob
White. Bob was the first Secretary in 1996, and served
also as Vice Chairman until he took over as Chairman.
John Clark then presented Bob with his Gold Badge.
This now means that four members of the Branch are the proud holders of this prestigious award - John Neal and John Clark in additin to our two newest recipients.
Because Bob and Joy White had declared their intentions to retire from their respective positions as Chairman and Secretary, elections were held for these posts. Dennis Weir was elected as Chairman and John Neal as Secretary. Congratulations to both.
Tom Neal was appointed as Branch Standard Bearer on the resignation of Dave Foley who had carried out this duty in an admirable way for the last few years. Our thanks to Dave for his efforts and to Tom for stepping into the breach.
Christine Whimpenny was elected as the Branch delegate to Annual Conference and to the Annual Meeting of District Conference.
When it came to the Branch nomination for National Chairman, John Crisford was given the support of all, while Terry Whittles was supported as the Branch's nomination for National Vice Chairman.
It was also announced that our President, David Whimpenny, had announced his intention to stand for the Board of Trustees, and this was supported unanimously by all present.
All Office Bearers presented their reports which were accepted by members. The District Chairman, Dave Street, gave a spirited talk on the state of the District.
In the evening, this year there was no evening function due to a lack of support. However a surprise birthday party was held for Joy White in Ravenstone Village Hall, and a few of the members attended.
Sunday morning saw the annual Service of Remembrance in St Marys in the Elms Church in Woodhouse. As usual, the church was packed with members of the Branch and locals from the village, and the service was conducted in a very confident manner by Gary Lee, the lay preacher for Woodhouse Eaves. The magnificent sum of £421.36 was collected for the Poppy Appeal' Afterwards, wreaths were laid by a representative of the Parish Council, a representative from the Defence Sixth Form College, a representative from DSSS, Chicksands, the District Chairman and the Branch Chairman. A sizeable numer of spectators witnessed the event.
Following this service, refreshments were provided by ladies from the village in the local hall before some members retired to the local Curzon Arms for lunch.
All in all, an eventful and successful weekend.
