Here is what Jez has to say about the challenge which he is about to undertake

At the beginning of April 2015 I am travelling to Morocco to take part in the Marathon des Sables. Known simply as the MdS, the race is a gruelling multi-stage adventure through a formidable landscape in one of the world’s most inhospitable climates - the Sahara desert. The rules require you to be self-sufficient, to carry with you on your back everything except water that you need to survive. You are given a place in a tent to sleep at night, but any other equipment and food must be carried.

Needing a serious amount of motivation to even train for this event, let alone complete it, I have decided to run for the Royal British Legion, a charity dear to a lot of our hearts.

As such I have set up a Just Giving fundraising page and would be really grateful if you could sponsor me as I undertake this adventure:

Please share with friends/colleagues/anybody, who can spare a couple of pounds to help me raise and I really hope, surpass my target.

If/when I complete the MdS, I will have run the equivalent of five and a half marathons in five or six days, a total distance of some 250+ km, approximately 160 miles - most people buy a sports car for their mid-life crisis, this is mine!

Many, many thanks, in advance of your help / support. Nearer the time I will post a link so you can follow my progress in the event.

Whilst not wanting to devalue or decry those wonderful and challenging fundraising efforts, undertaken by our members in the past, I think you would all agree that Jez’s challenge is the most spectacular to date.

Please be generous in your sponsorship support for this marvellous effort

There are several options as to how you can contribute. It is very simple to make a donation via Just Giving by going to

Alternatively, for those who are reluctant make on-line payments, you could send cash or a cheque, payable to Y Services (Garats Hay) Branch RBL and annotated on the back Jez Bailey Marathon des Sables to the Branch Chairman. Just contact me via email at and I will send you my home address.
